Peony as a symbol
Flower doctor
Few people know that the name of peonies originates from the legendary physician Pean. This man healed not only people, but also gods who received serious wounds in battles. Many peoples believed in the superpower of these flowers to cure various ailments. Thus, the ancient Greeks believed that peonies could heal 20 diseases. Therefore, there was not a single monastery garden in which peonies did not grow. Until the 1800s, such flowers were used only as medicinal plants, some varieties as a seasoning for food. The Japanese name for peonies translates as “medicine from China,” and the Chinese themselves still respect the flower and call it “flower fairy.”
Peony as a symbol
At different times, in different countries, peonies were considered a symbol of completely different phenomena. For example, in China, from the point of view of Feng Shui, the peony has incredible magical powers. For two thousand years, peonies have become symbols of health, good luck and happiness for people around the world. Later, they acquired the meaning of a symbol of spring and female beauty. Also to this day, these flowers are believed to bring good luck and symbolize wealth.
