Flower Etiquette: What to Give for Different Holidays

2024-08-21 00:13:08

Flowers have long been considered one of the best ways to show attention and please a person, conveying the most sincere feelings and wishes. Even today, a fragrant bouquet can become a universal gift. It is important to know what flowers are usually presented at different celebrations in order to certainly give positive emotions.

What is flower etiquette?

“Flower etiquette” means a certain set of rules and recommendations that allow you to make a bouquet appropriate and truly valuable for the recipient. This approach helps to express the sincere attitude of the giver and make a wonderful gift for the occasion.

Flower etiquette largely depends on the country, its culture and mentality. Thus, the same flower in different countries can express both joy and sorrow. The number of flowers can also have different interpretations, depending on the culture. Considering the generally accepted realities for European countries, it is worth saying right away that it is customary to present an odd number of flowers for joyful events. Of course, this is not always true for bouquets that contain more than a hundred buds.

Let's consider the basic rules of flower etiquette that should be followed:

  • Make sure there is no allergy. A person or members of his family may be allergic to a certain type of flower.
  • Carry the bouquet with the buds down. At the same time, the gift should be presented with the buds up.
  • When presenting, look the person in the eyes. It would be very appropriate to say warm words as a congratulation.
  • When choosing flowers, consider the gender, age, marital status and, of course, the tastes of the recipient.
  • Choose shades depending on the relationship with the recipient. For a loved one, you can always choose something bright and individual, while for a stranger or a boss, it is better to present a more classic bouquet in subdued tones.
  • When presenting a bouquet from a married couple, the gift is in the hands of the man. The bouquet is presented in the presence of the spouse.

Choosing flowers and their meaning

Fragrant buds carry deep symbolism that should be thought about when presenting certain flowers for a holiday. We offer a short overview of the most common special occasions and bouquets suitable for them:

  • Birthdays and anniversaries. Special occasions where one hero of the occasion is present require a special approach. It is important to take into account both personal preferences and relationships with the recipient. For such cases, lilies are the best choice, which have long been a symbol of nobility, elegance and grace. They will be a universal choice for almost any person. If we are talking about a young girl, you can always present her with a bouquet of gerberas, roses or eustomas. It is also important to pay attention to the color and composition of the bouquet. If you are in a close relationship, you can safely choose a brighter bouquet, including different buds in a harmonious combination. For a more formal gift, mono-bouquets in pastel colors are optimal. In addition, people of a respectable age can be presented with compositions of deep shades, for example, red, burgundy or purple. This will allow you not only to congratulate the person, but also to express respect to him. To give the gift a solemnity, you can opt for lush asters or chrysanthemums.
  • Weddings. Such events are special, so you should approach the choice of a bouquet thoughtfully. Light shades are relevant for classic weddings - pink, beige, white, blue and others. Bouquets of hydrangeas, peonies, roses of various varieties are perfect. It is worth inquiring about the color scheme of the celebration in advance so that the bouquet looks more appropriate and conveys the atmosphere of the event.
  • International Women's Day. On the most tender and feminine day of the year, it is customary to give primroses. Bouquets of tulips, irises and mimosa are perhaps the most common options. You can also consider compositions of daffodils, which reflect love and light. To make an original gift, you can opt for gerberas or decorative sunflowers.
  • Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day, it is customary to give bouquets in various shades of red, because they express sympathy, love and passion. Roses are a traditional choice. At the same time, lilies or orchids can be a wonderful alternative.
  • New Year and Christmas. On these joyful winter holidays, it is no less relevant to give flowers. These can be both classic bouquets of white roses and original compositions of amaryllises, alstroemerias, chrysanthemums and orchids. To emphasize the features of the event, it is better to choose colors associated with winter holidays - green, red and white.

A properly selected bouquet can become an ideal gift for any festive event. Experienced florists will help you create the most suitable composition and convey sincere emotions.
