Flower of the emperors

The question of which flower could symbolize Japan, most people will call Sakura. However, the "official" Japanese flower is the chrysanthemum, and the image of the 16-petalled chrysanthemum is used as a symbol of the Imperial house. In Japan, there is no established by the law, the symbolic flower or coat of arms, however, the Imperial chrysanthemum you can see on the cover of Japanese passports, on some coins and on the doors of Japanese diplomatic missions abroad.

 

Chrysanthemums were brought to Japan from China in the Nara period (710-794) as a medicinal plant. They are often referred to in the poetic collection "a Collection of old and new songs of Japan", established in the Heian period (794-1192), which indicates its popularity among the courtiers not only as a medical but also a decorative flower. It is believed that it began to be used as the emblem of emperors after Emperor Go-Toba (1180-1239) chose it as a personal emblem.

 

Only in Japan there are more than 350 varieties of chrysanthemums, and all the world around 200 000. The Japanese varieties are called the word Wagyu, "Japanese chrysanthemum". Bred in the Edo period (1603-1868) Wagyu with their special colors and shapes katangese are called "classical chrysanthemums". Bagiku divided into three basic categories according to size ookiku, medium and small tugcu kogiku. In ooriku with flowers with a diameter of 18 cm and more out azumano, "thick", kudamono, "tubular", and lchimonji, flat flower with two layers of petals, the chrysanthemum of this type and was the prototype of the Imperial symbol. Tugcu with flowers 9-18 centimeters are often used for funeral ornaments, and small kogiku in bonsai as indoor plants or garden beds.
