Traditions of the old New Year
In a few days, a holiday will come, which many consider to be the final in the New Year and Christmas period. We are talking about the New Year in the old (Julian) style, the onset of which people celebrate on the night of January 13-14. Despite the fact that in January there is another major holiday - the Epiphany, it is the Old New Year that is often associated with the end of the holiday period. In the cities in the middle of January, Christmas trees are removed, the holiday illumination is dismantled, and people are gradually entering the usual working rhythm.
This holiday with an unusual and funny name arose as a result of a change in the calendar. More than a hundred years ago, in 1918, many countries switched from the old Julian calendar to the Gregorian. The difference between them was 13 days. But the Orthodox Church continued its chronology in accordance with the Julian calendar.

Traditions
A popular tradition in every family was eating special dumplings with a surprise. A variety of objects were hidden in their filling - from a bay leaf to a coin. Got a dumpling with a cherry? To the temptation. With cabbage? To the money. The ring spoke of an imminent wedding, the thread warned of a long journey, the button to a new thing, pepper and salt to chagrin.
A very vivid tradition of the holiday was generous and seeded. On the night of January 14, young girls were going to guess.
A special porridge was also boiled. Croup for her poured the oldest woman in the family. Water from the well was supposed to bring the most adult man at home. Groats from the barn were delivered at two in the morning. It was impossible to touch her, so as not to change his future. Then, when they made porridge, all the family members sat around. The woman stirred her, pronouncing special words. Then they placed the porridge in the oven and waited for the result: if the porridge came out of the pot, this promised trouble to the whole house, so no one ate it; a lot of foam from above portended empty chores; rich tasty porridge meant harvest and happiness to all households.
